Test Strategy for CTOs

The correct test strategy from a CTO's perspective: the test pyramid (many unit tests for business logic (fast, cheap to write, catch logic errors), fewer integration tests for API endpoints (test that the full request/response cycle works correctly), few E2E tests for critical user journeys (test that the most important flows work from the user's perspective not every flow, just the ones where a failure is a business P0)). The anti-pattern to avoid: an inverted pyramid (many slow, brittle E2E tests and few unit tests) this produces a CI pipeline that takes 30 minutes to run, fails frequently on test infrastructure issues rather than actual code problems, and gives engineers no guidance on where the failure is.

Testing infrastructure that CTOs actually want: Playwright for E2E tests (the current standard for browser automation significantly more reliable than Selenium, excellent TypeScript support, parallel test execution, and screenshot/video capture on failure), Vitest or Jest for unit and integration tests (Vitest for projects using Vite, Jest for others both provide the assertion library, mocking, and coverage reporting needed for a complete unit test suite), and CI/CD integration (tests run on every PR PR cannot be merged if tests fail, test coverage cannot drop below the agreed threshold, and test results are reported as a GitHub check so engineers see results without leaving the PR).
